Sky to Launch 3D Channel Pub TV This Weekend

People have already embraced 3D cinema and because Sky’s 3D service uses the same kind of technology, we’re confident there will be demand for sport, movies, concerts and drama in 3D,” said Gerry O’Sullivan, Sky’s director of strategic product development.

Rugby matches in the Six Nations championship are to be amongst the first events filmed and shown on the 3D channel which is due to roll out across the nation starting in April.

This coming weekend the match between Arsenal and Manchester United can be seen in 3D in pubs in London, Manchester, Cardiff and Edinburgh.

Alice in Wonderland is an upcoming fantasy-adventure film directed by Tim Burton. It is an extension to the Lewis Carroll novels Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass. The film will use a technique combining live action and animation. Mia Wasikowska plays the role of Alice, alongside Johnny Depp as The Mad Hatter, Helena Bonham Carter as The Red Queen, Anne Hathaway as The White Queen, and Crispin Glover as The Knave of Hearts.

A sequel to Lewis Carroll’s original stories, the movie has Alice Kingsley, now 19, attending a party at a Victorian estate, only to find she is about to be proposed to by a rich suitor in front of hundreds of snooty society types. She runs off, following a white rabbit into a hole and ending up in Wonderland, a place she visited many years before, though she doesn’t remember it. The White Rabbit claims to have come back for Alice because she is the only one who can slay the Jabberwock, the beast who guards the Red Queen’s empire. Alice remains completely unaware of why she is in Wonderland, and is confused about the fact that she had once visited Wonderland years before. She then embarks — assuming both large and small sizes — on an adventure of self discovery and to save Wonderland from the Red Queen’s reign of terror with the help of her Wonderland friends.

Toy Story 3 3D

It is the third installment in the Toy Story series and is scheduled for release on June 18, 2010, in the United States.[1] Lee Unkrich, who edited the previous films and co-directed the second, takes over as director. Tom Hanks and Tim Allen have been confirmed to return to voice the characters of Woody and Buzz respectively.

Andy is departing for college, and his toys, including Woody (Tom Hanks) and Buzz (Tim Allen), are going to be put in the attic. Before they can be put in the attic, they are accidentally thrown away and are picked up by the garbage men. The toys find themselves at a local day-care center, where they must try to survive the playful but careless pre-school children. Woody attempts to save his friends and find themselves a new home, but matters are further complicated when Buzz is damaged during an escape attempt. The toys try to reset Buzz, but end up causing him to revert to a Spanish version of his delusions of being a space ranger, much to the other toys’ discomfort.

Guardians of Ga’hoole

Zack Snyder’s animated film adaptation of Kathryn Lansky’s children’s book Guardians of Ga’Hoole (part of a 14 book bestselling kids series) has been described the tone as more “Harry Potter” “than Happy Feet.” The story follows a young barn owl named Soren, who is kidnapped by owls of St. Aggie’s,where owlets are brainwashed into becoming soldiers. He and his new friends escape to the island of Ga’Hoole, to assist its noble, wise owls who fight the army being created by the wicked rulers of St. Aggie’s. The voice cast includes Jim Sturgess (21), Geoffrey Rush (Pirates of the Caribbean), Rachael Taylor (Transformers) and David Wenham (300). It has been rumored that Hugh Jackman, Hugo Weaving and Ryan Kwanten (True Blood) will make-up the voice cast lead roles, but that has yet to be officially confirmed.

Sony to Launch 3D TV by Late 2010

Sony plans to be selling 3D tv sets by late 2010, the Financial Times reports.

Sony will also add 3D technology to it’s Vaio laptops, PlayStation 3 console and its blu-ray players.

Howard Stringer, Sony CEO said that, “…the 3D train is on the track, and we at Sony are ready to drive it home.”

There are no industry agreed standards for 3D technology so it appears we may be in for yet another format war akin to the recent blu-ray hd-dvd battle.

Queen Elizabeth II Coronation Footage to be Shown In 3D

A great find for Channel 4 – unseen footage of Queen Elizabeth’s Coronation from 1953 in 3D. I suppose it goes to show how long a desire for 3D television has been present in the broadcast arena.

Word is that Channel 4’s “3D Week” will feature the coronation footage as well as other programs including Derren Brown’s 3D Magic Spectacular along with greatest 3D moments from the history of 3D television film and pop video.

Channel 4 to beat Sky to 3D with it’s own 3D TV Week

Channel 4 has announced it will host a “3D Week” sometime this Autumn, beating SKY’s 2010 launch of their 3D TV Channel.

The move is little more than a gimmick, however, since Channel 4 plans to use a very simple implementation of 3D: ColorCode Technology. This basically enables Channel 4 to broadcast a vaguely altered picture which when viewed through the amber and blue filters on the cardboard glasses will give a vague 3D effect.

Channel 4 plans to air “The Queen in 3D” and Derren Brown’s “3D Magic Spectacular” during the 3D fest.

While viewers will still need some kind of glasses for SKY’s offering they will also need a particular type of television to support the new technology. Keep your eyes open for 3D ready television’s to start popping up everywhere.

3D Television Standard to be Proposed?

The Society of Motion Picture & Television Engineers is to start detailed work in June on its proposed standard for 3D television. Peter Symes, SMPTE’s director of engineering and standards says it isn’t likely that the 3D standard will emerge until 2010.

SMPTE’s concept is for an all-embracing 3D Home Master that covers not just broadcast TV but Blu-ray, console games, cable and IPTV transmission and even mobile phone delivery. The problem is that each of these methods have their own standards bodies dealing with their respective formats. However, it is looking increasingly likely that Blu-ray’s 1080p and 60Hz ‘standard’ will form the bedrock for 3D.

“A number of proposals have been put forward [for example] of how to do this for Blu-ray. But the important point is that the different distribution platforms will have one deliverable [the 3-D home master] as their starting point. It will allow for the efficient production of stereoscopic content because everyone will have a common target without worrying about the delivery or the display mechanism,” Symes told Multichannel News.

First Dedicated 3D TV Network Startup in the US?

“We fully plan to have, as soon as we can acquire the library, the first full-time 3-D network in the country,” Donaldson told Daily Variety.

Despite many set top boxes not supporting 3D technology, many Hi-Def Televisions do come ready to support 3D broadcasting as it becomes available.

The company hopes to ship 3D ready set top boxes for around $50 including glasses.

The move follows Japan’s Nippon Broadcasting who launched a limited schedule of 3-D programming over a satellite channel in 2008.

The plan is for AMG to be broadcasting in 3-D several hours a day by year’s end.

Terry Elaqua, prexy of AMG TV, said, “I think in the baby stages of this you’ll see a series of specials” that would be released on the network and made available elsewhere.

Sky puts UK’s first live 3D broadcast up on the smallish screen

The broadcast, a performance by the band Keane, was part of a 3D music event co-produced by Sky, specialist 3D production company Nineteen Fifteen Productions and Island Records, to coincide with Keane’s performance at London’s Abbey Road studios.

The three-screen 3D event involved Sky broadcasting a simulcast of the gig and displaying the event on a 46-inch high-definition 3D TV screen. It also comprised a 3D webcast using anaglyph (red/green) glasses, as well as a live test broadcast via a satellite downlink to a Vue cinema kitted out with 3D equipment.

Sky said last night’s broadcast did not mark the launch of a 3D TV product, but was “another stage in Sky’s ongoing research and development into the technical possibilities and potential demand for 3DTV in the UK”.

The broadcaster added that it was working with TV manufacturers, broadcasters, studios and other content owners to establish the potential for commercial 3D TV services.

Mitsubishi Launch 82 inch 3D Ready TV

Not content with offering the largest of the home theatre entertainment screens on offer, Mitsubishi ups the game with this 3D ready offering.

Claiming demand for the 3D technology is set to rise with the emergence of 3D broadcasting pioneered by Sky in the UK Mitsubishi may be onto something with this behemoth.

“As the home theater market continues to flourish and the cinema space continues to embrace 3D, we clearly see Mitsubishi’s 3D-Ready Home Theater TVs playing a key role in meeting consumers craving for the best and most advanced home theater experience”, said David Naranjo, director of product development, Mitsubishi.

The price tag isn’t cheap though: $4100 for the 82 incher. Ouch.
